Swedish Aid to Web Activists?

On Thursday, March 10, I will participate in a meeting hosted by the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation (in Swedish), Gunilla Carlsson, where direct foreign aid for “Web Activists” and digital democracy will be discussed. The purpose of the meeting — spurred in part by events in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya — will be to develop an outline of the principles, priorities and potential focus areas for future Swedish international aid in relation to online activism, freedom of speech and democracy. Some projects have been proposed to the Minister, which will also be discussed. I myself have a number of critical questions regarding the use and role of social media in these cases which I hope to raise. Other participants at the meeting include representatives of, for example, Reporters Without Borders, Tor and Global Voices (a transnational community of bloggers).
